Mazda is recalling their cars because there is a risk that spiders will get into the fuel lines. Is this not a problem for all cars, or does Mazda use special fuel lines in which these spiders have a better environment?

I dunno but my garage is full of black widows.

I hope I don't have fuel lines that spiders love.

Thanks for that, the article doesn't explain if/why this would be a Mazda specific problem.

It probably isn't a Mazda-specific problem, just that they happen to build their cars in an area where the spiders must have a high enough concentration to get into their cars?

ditto what Uly said. The spiders can get into the evap vents and since (like most of us) they like the smell of gasoline they decide to live there. The webs block the escaping vapors and can cause pressure to build, sometimes resulting in a cracked tank

Thanks for the link! Now I know that some chitenous creatures use hydrocarbon signaling ;)

Spiders like all kinds of hidey spots. Fuel vapor lines are just one on the Mazda6 they are able to enter and screw things up. They build webs, and or die in the small rubber and metal lines, then pressure builds up and the fuel tanks crack. Lotsa pressure.

Like I know.

I just saw that article earlier today and knew it would help.

I'm no expert. Clearly spiders want more zoom-zoom.

Mazda Spyder?

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, I dunno. I was wondering the same thing actually, as to why the Mazda 6 is effected but not other cars.

It isn't, this quote explains that those spiders pretty much live everywhere. although the author used the word "endemic" incorrectly, these lil critters will go everywhere.

"Second, keep in mind that yellow sac spiders are very common. Like, endemically common. Entomologist Chris Buddle says they should be called "ceiling spiders" because they can be found on the ceilings of practically any house. So it shouldn't be surprising that they're in cars, or automobile factories — they're kind of everywhere."
